Sensory Oral Sequencing (SOS) approach to feeding

Developed by Dr K. Toomey, the SOS approach to feeding difficulties is a playful, interactive and effective programme integrated into our occupational therapy sessions where appropriate. Following typical developmental processes, the SOS approach climbs a hierarchy of stages led by a child's strengths, motivators and abilities. Oral motor and fine motor skills are graded with food to explore textures, smells, colours, sounds, density and weight.  Connecting with food with the whole body's sensory systems means a positive relationship emerges with food through the SOS core value 'play with a purpose.'

Committing to the SOS approach in full usually requires a minimum of 12 individual OT sessions alongside a home programme agreed with parents in advance.

Principles of feeding supports for the home environment are recommended to families prior to committing to the programme.

Dr K. Toomey's resources and free parent workshops found on her website are highly recommended for families embarking on a feeding programme with us at Ambroise Farm.

Miriam Hollely-Barik is the accredited OT to lead SOS feeding programmes. Please state your interest in SOS when you complete the OT referral form.
